Cross Country, a fall sport, runs from mid-August to late October. Both boys’ and girls’ races are 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), and courses are mainly on grass or trails. There are 10 “away” race meets during the season. Most are after school. Both the Boys’ and Girls’ varsity teams consist of the fastest 7-8 runners, and an unlimited number of runners compete on the Boys’ and Girls’ JV teams. Runners are awarded for both their individual placement and a team score.
To prepare for the season, participants are expected to train during the summer, running 3-4 times per week and running up to 4-6 miles by mid-August. Students are encouraged to attend open track nights, participate in any local (5K) runs during the year, and log their summer mileage on the WHS Cross Country Google Classroom page.
There will be meetings for prospective participants at the middle school and high school, as well as a parent meeting at the high school in mid-to-late May to prepare students for summer running and the fall season.
Our mission is to train students to build strength, endurance, and teamwork, and to practice healthy long-distance running as a cardio-fitness lifestyle.
